Driving on the Beaches

Driving on the Nags Head beaches is permited from October 1st until April 30th of each year. If you wish to drive on the beaches during this time, you must obtain a 25 dollar permit from the Town of Nags Head office.

Driving is permited during all seasons without a permit on the beach at Oregon Inlet.

Launching Boats and Wave Riders

Boat docks and ramps are often private property of various associations and homes. Please check your cottage's list of amenities to see if there is a private dock or ramp which you can use (sometimes for a fee).

A public launching spot leading to the ocean can be found in South Nags Head at Oregon Inlet. This launching spot is free of charge and can be used by anyone at any time.

If you wish to launch a jet ski or smaller boat into the sound, there is a public ramp located at the end of the large bridge leading into Manteo. After crossing the bridge, turn left and you will find this launching spot.

Romantic and Fun Things to Do

The Lost Colony Play
One hundred and seventeen men, women and children establish the first English settlement in the new world on Roanoke Island in 1587-then mysteriously disappear... the exciting story of The Lost Colony, America’s first and longest-running outdoor drama. Written by Pulitzer Prizewinner Paul Green and performed under the stars at the beautiful Waterside Theatre, the show has thrilled over three million visitors since its debut in 1937. Andy Griffith, a long-time resident of Manteo, NC, was one of the early stars of the Lost Colony

Elizabethan Gardens
Nestled among the trees at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on the north end of the island, the Elizabethan Gardens are a special place of peace and natural beauty amidst the crush of the tourist-laden beach resorts less than ten miles away. A traditional English flower garden which is, for now, somewhat of a secret.

The Roanoke Aquarium
This aquarium is located on the sound in Roanoke Island. The aquarium displays different fish which are indiginous to the Outer banks. Other animals such as turtles, aligators and river otters are also featured here. Many additional fun activities for children. Also check the calendar which is linked at the top of this page to see if any aquarium events are being held while you visit. Further information can be found on their website or by calling 252-473-3493

Jockey's Ridge (a.k.a. The Dunes)
Jockey's Ridge State Park is a 414 acre park and is home to the largest sand dune on the East Coast. The trek to the top of the highest dune allows a spectacular view of both Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, as well as the Roanoke Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. The climb to the top is a challenge, but the chance of seeing the many hang-gliders and kites makes it worthwhile.
Jockey's Ridge State Park Box 592 Nags Head, NC 27959.
The Park number is 252-441-7132

Lighthouses of the Outer Banks
