Things to Do

The Lost Colony Play
One hundred and seventeen men, women and children establish the first English settlement in the new world on Roanoke Island in 1587-then mysteriously disappear... the exciting story of The Lost Colony, America’s first and longest-running outdoor drama. Written by Pulitzer Prizewinner Paul Green and performed under the stars at the beautiful Waterside Theatre, the show has thrilled over three million visitors since its debut in 1937. Andy Griffith, a long-time resident of Manteo, NC, was one of the early stars of the Lost Colony

Elizabethan Gardens
Nestled among the trees at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on the north end of the island, the Elizabethan Gardens are a special place of peace and natural beauty amidst the crush of the tourist-laden beach resorts less than ten miles away. A traditional English flower garden which is, for now, somewhat of a secret.

The Roanoke Aquarium
This aquarium is located on the sound in Roanoke Island. The aquarium displays different fish which are indigenous to the Outer banks. Other animals such as turtles, alligators and river otters are also featured here. Many additional fun activities for children. Also check the calendar which is linked at the top of this page to see if any aquarium events are being held while you visit.
